About Me

I’m an academic, writer and commentator.

As regards the first of those, I’ve held a number of academic posts over the past two decades. A multidisciplinary social scientist, my expertise is in: Islamophobia; the contemporary socio-political problematisation of Muslims and the religion of Islam; the manifestation of hate, bigotry & discrimination; the extreme, radical and far-right in Britain; the role and function of religion in the public and political spaces; and notions of identity relating to Britishness.

As regards the second and third, I have an interest in all of the above as also popular culture including the role and function of the media, social media, film, music and television.

I’m published widely both here in the UK and elsewhere arund the world including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Pakistan, Serbia, Sweden and the United States among others. As well as publishing two sole-authored monographs (with two more in the pipeline), two self-curated edited collections and almost 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, I have also written extensively for a range of non-academic and non-specialist sources including the Conversation UK, Perspektif and HuffPost among others.

As well as giving talks to a broad range of audiences across a variety of non-academic settings, I also appear regularly in the broadcast and print media. So too have I taken on a number of independent advisory roles within the public and political spaces including being an independent adviser to the British Government on Anti-Muslim Hate and Islamophobia. I was also appointed an expert witness for the defence in the National College of Teaching and Leadership’s professional misconduct case against senior leaders of Park View Educational Trust.

During that same period, I also submitted written and oral evidence to a range of different government bodies and commissions including the House of Lords Select Committee on Religious Offences, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Islamophobia, All Party Parliamentary Group on Universities, All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, Home Affairs Select Committee on Hate Crimes, and the Commission on Islam, Participation and Public Life.

Proud to originate from Bermondsey, south London I’m also passionate about my working class roots and my Irish and Scottish heritage. Away from his academic and research interests, he enjoys film and cinema (with a particular penchant for horror and zombie genres), has an eclectic taste in music, and so too am I proud of being a lifelong supporter of Millwall Football Club.
